The etiopathogenesis of periodontal disease will be reviewed with an emphasis on the role played by subgingival microbial communities. Participants will recognize that the taxonomical composition and functional potential of subgingival microbial communities can influence the host’s local response and drive periodontal disease initiation and progression.
