Dr. Allyson Berent is a DVM and residency/fellowship-trained veterinary internist who specializes in veterinary interventional radiology and interventional endoscopy. Dr. Berent graduated from Cornell University Magna Cum Laude with Distinction and Highest Honors receiving a B.S in Animal Science and being the recipient of the Morrison Scholar Award. She was accepted early admission to Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, where she received Exceptional Academic Achievement Recognition every year from 1998-2002.

Dr. Berent received her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2002, graduating salutatorian with highest honors and distinction. Dr. Berent was awarded the Merck Award of Clinical and Academic Achievement, The Daphne Award for Academic Excellence and Clinical Proficiency, and was the Class of 2002 Degree Marshall for the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine.

From 2002-2003 Dr. Berent completed a small animal rotating internship at the University of Minnesota, followed by a residency in small animal internal medicine at the Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania from 2003-2005. During her residency Dr. Berent was awarded the International Iams Award for Best Overall Resident Case Report. From 2005-2006 Dr. Berent completed the first veterinary fellowship in Interventional Radiology at the Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and a fellowship in Endourology at Thomas Jefferson University. She served as Adjunct Assistant Professor in Internal Medicine and Interventional Radiology/Interventional Endoscopy at the Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania helping to establish the first Interventional Radiology/Endoscopy service in veterinary medicine. In 2006 Dr. Berent helped to grow the IR/IE fellowship program and has since been responsible to help train 6 additional IR/IE fellows and 6 IR/IE specialty interns. Dr. Berent has also helped to train 48 internal medicine residents over 300 small animal rotating interns since 2006.

In 2009 Dr. Berent joined the Animal Medical Center in New York City as the director of the Interventional Endoscopy Service where she co-founded the first full time Interventional Radiology and Endoscopy program for veterinary medicine in the world. Dr. Berent has received numerous teaching and research awards throughout her career. Dr. Berent also serves as Adjunct Professor at Purdue University and University of Guelph-Ontario Veterinary College.

Dr. Berent has particularly focused on translational clinical research in medical device development, stem cell therapy through regenerative medicine for acute and chronic kidney disease, novel ways to treat ureteral diseases, urinary incontinence, and other areas of endourology. Dr. Berent has also helped to develop new alternatives for the treatment of extrahepatic biliary duct obstructions.

Dr. Berent co-edited the first Veterinary IR textbook called Veterinary Image Guided Interventions, has written over 30 textbook chapters, and has over 90 peer-review publications in the veterinary literature. Dr. Berent has served as the PI- or Co-PI in over 20 clinical trials for veterinary medicine, and more recently has been intimately involved in the drug development process through the FDA and IND-enabling studies.
