Unfortunately, seizure control cannot always be achieved in dogs with epilepsy. Thus, there is a need for the development of novel therapeutic approaches. In this seminar, current concepts and developments for future therapeutic management will be discussed.
In this context, it is of interest that the phytocannabinoid cannabidiol has been recently licensed for use in human patients. The development of this drug and associated discussions have triggered an interest of pet owners in this potential therapeutic option. The current state-of-knowledge will be discussed focusing on evidence for anticonvulsant effects and on information about its possible use in dogs.
